Great Commission

The Great commission is our mission. It is the entire purpose for our existence as the body of Christ. It is the foundation of everything we are and everything we do. It has to do with the totality of God’s work. If we’re not building bridges to cross cultural boundaries to share the good news of Jesus Christ, we’re not obedient to the mission Jesus gave before He ascended to heaven:

“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” (Matthew 28:19-20)

This is known as the Great Commission. Jesus Christ co-missioning his disciples in His mission. The instructions were to go, evangelize and win to Christ, disciple them to maturity and then repeat the process.

Even though many believe this commission was given only to the twelve disciples, scriptures are clear that this commission is given to all whom are His disciples in all ages. From that time and now into the church age, Jesus Christ has commissioned his followers in this same mission of the Great Commission.

The heart of the Great Commission is discipleship (Matthew 28:19). This has been God’s plan for His kingdom from the very beginning of man’s creation. God commissioned Adam to be fruitful, multiply and replenish the earth (Gen 1:28). Adam was to have children who would also reproduce to multiply and replenish the earth to fill His kingdom.

This is exactly what the Great Commission is. It is to win, disciple and multiply to reproduce to fill the earth for God’s kingdom. Multiplication is having spiritual children and teaching them to have spiritual children. From the time of Jesus Christ’s teachings to His disciples, the faith learned was passed on to other faithful men who passed it on to other faithful men just as Paul instructed Timothy to do in 2 Timothy 2:2.

That is discipleship as God lays out in the Great Commission. The commission is to all His disciples in every age. Since God’s mission is rooted in His nature, it is impossible to be conformed to His image without sharing His heart. If we really have a heart for God, we’ll have a heart for His mission.
